At last! Leonardo DiCaprio has won an Oscar! After being nominated for the first time in 1993, and another 4 times after, he finally won 'Best Actor' for his role in The Revenant.
Usually, people wouldn't care as much about an actor winning this award, especially since he's only been nominated 5 times overall, but this is different with DiCaprio because of one thing: Memes. The premise of 'Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscar' meme is a series of jokes about the lack of recognition the actor has received from the Academy Awards.
The meme originally started in February 2011 when E! Online published an article titled, “Do Oscar Voters Really Hate Leonardo DiCaprio?” This article includes reasons and possible explanations as to why Leonardo hadn't won an Academy Award. Then later that year, Funny or Die uploaded a video titled "L. DiCaprio," which is a parody of a trailer for Leo's film "J. Edgar." This video depicts the actor in a state of rage as he endlessly pursues the award that the Academy refuses to award him. And so the 'Leo's Oscar' meme was born.
The meme wasn't as popular as others until a gif on Tumblr surfaced of DiCaprio looking very upset at the 2012 Golden Globes.

It was after this that the meme really took off.

The meme was immensely popular during the time of the 2015 Oscars, and so many people were anxious about finding out of he would win or not, but that year, he lost to Matthew McConaughey. Over the course of one year, the meme had been spread across the internet and it was a well-known fact among households that Leonardo had not won an Oscar. After discovering that Leonardo was nominated again for Best Actor in 2016, the world waited. It was determined that the internet would 'blow up' if he did win, and it would if he didn't win.
On the 28th of February, it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio had won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and, just as expected, the internet went crazy.
Many people thought that, since Leo had won, there would be no reason for there to be a meme anymore. However, this was not the case. The meme evolved into a new one. Although it is not as popular now, the new meme is about Leo winning the Oscar and how it was a long time coming. The new meme is demonstrated in this video by Jacksfilms, and it is quite ironic and he is showing that the old meme is dying by showing the new meme.
